Abstract This seminar will cover the basics of owning and operating an electric vehicle (EV) for a general audience. The first half will introduce EVs from the
perspective of primary consumer considerations: purchase price, running costs, driving range, and the logistics of EV charging. The second half will outline a simple framework to estimate the energy consumption of a vehicle using aerodynamic coefficients,
dimensions, and weight. The calculated power consumption of a small EV is then compared to the potential of vehicle-integrated photovoltaics, with lessons drawn from the success of Sunswift’s solar car designs. This seminar is intended to serve as an introduction
to EV ownership for those curious to make the switch.

| Brief Bio
John is a silicon solar cell fabrication specialist with over two decades of experience in renewable energy. Currently, he is the ACDC Research
Group’s manager, overseeing two large Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) projects at the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering (SPREE), UNSW. He was awarded a PhD in Photovoltaics from SPREE in 2016 under the guidance of Professors
Alison Lennon and Stuart Wenham. In 2017, as the Passivated Contacts Team Leader at the Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore, National University of Singapore, John spearheaded technology transfer projects for multiple Tier-1 cell manufacturers, enabling
the commercialisation of their ‘TOPCon’ solar cells. John’s interest in the synergy between renewable energy, EVs, and energy storage began as early as 2014, while publishing articles on Solar Choice News and RenewEconomy. He is an advocate for affordable
EVs and has a passion for dispelling EV myths.
