Abstract


Pure sulfide chalcopyrite Cu(In,Ga)S2 is a promising wide-bandgap absorber for tandem solar cells, yet Cu(In,Ga)S2-based devices are limited by large open-circuit voltage deficits of > 300 mV owing to bulk and interface recombination losses. The talk will be focused on identifying and addressing the photovoltage limiting factors in CIGS devices. Key aspects such as (i) identification of performance-limiting defects in CIGS, (ii) Importance of absorber composition and buffer layer, and (iii) strategies to overcome the low-efficiency barrier will be discussed. Detailed spectroscopic, electrical, and theoretical insights on CIGS will be presented. The holistic approach led to ~ 15 % efficient CIGS device, without involving toxic CdS, KCN and H2S-based process.

Brief Bio


Dr. Sudhanshu Shukla is a Senior Researcher at IMEC Leuven, Belgium. He received his PhD from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore in 2017. Before he joined IMEC, he worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Luxembourg from 2018 to 2020, and a Research Fellow SinBeRISE from 2017 to 2018. He was also a Visiting Research Scholar at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), University of California Berkeley in 2016. He was a recipient of “Seal of Excellence, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions”. Dr. Sudhanshu Shukla has worked on different PV projects including perovskite solar cells, Wide bandgap CuInGaS2 solar cells. He is now working on “Materials for Photoelectrochemical Solar to Fuel Conversion” with Prof. Bart Vermang at IMEC.
